A head that to me is realized can summon up a whole [strikethrough] painting [/strikethrough] environment—a whole painting. Not so much by way of association but [strikethrough] just [/strikethrough] in the urgency it brings to the canvas. I don’t attempt to rationalize why it has to be a head and I don’t know why this head becomes for one foolish reason or another painted out later. But then the environment I’ve found summons up the

new head and figure. All this is of course a much messier process than can be described fraught with much error, accident and corrections.
