Description
In 1962 this work was stolen from an Air Express truck in New York en route from the Poindexter Gallery to its purchaser in California. The purchaser accepted another painting in substitution. In 1997 a researcher for the Diebenkorn Estate saw the painting in a Sotheby's catalogue. Sotheby's was notified, withdrew it from the sale, and stored it on their premises. An investigation found an owner who claimed to have purchased the painting from an estate sale. This could never be substantiated. The work remained at Sotheby's until 2006, when the Estate researchers discovered an entry in the Poindexter Gallery records that an insurance claim had been paid. Thus the work became the property of Providence Washington Insurance Company.
