Description
The artist's inscription refers to ceremonial bowls made by people of the Mimbres culture of southwestern New Mexico (1000–1250 CE), which his friend Tony Berlant collected. Some of these geometrically decorated earthen bowls had holes in the bottom; Diebenkorn seems to be playfully referring both to the black and white patterning and the patched hole in the paper.
