Description
In 1968 California Republican Max Rafferty won the primary election for a U.S. Senate seat. Although Rafferty was defeated by Democrat Alan Cranston, his record frightened many who knew him to be an extremist opponent of free speech in the name of conservative principles. Diebenkorn probably made this work as part of an artists' protest although the exact circumstances are not known.
