Description
In 1945 Diebenkorn received orders to report to Camp Pendleton, eighty miles south of Los Angeles. The Diebenkorns left their Quantico, Virginia home and Phyllis, pregnant with their first child, moved into the home of her aunt Daisy in the Hollywood Hills. Richard resided at the Marine Corps base and drove north to visit his wife on the weekends. Among the belongings of Daisy Day's deceased husband, Benjamin, an executive for Pennzoil, was a large supply of poster advertisements for Pennzoil products. Diebenkorn liked this coated paper and used its reverse side for some thirty drawings and collages.
